In yet another remark that could cause a controversy among the Congress, Sanjay Nirupam, the AICC secretary has said on Saturday that even Narendra Modi would have lost badly during the Lok Sabha elections if he had contested on a ticket from the Congress.

Nirupam, who had lost from the constituency of Mumbai North, has told reporters that in spite of several decisions that had been taken by it for the people’s welfare, there had been a wave of severe anti-incumbency that had world against the coalition of the Congress-led UPA.

He said that they had been in the government for a decade and, owing to several factors, there was public anger against the Congress. Nirupam then proceeded to say that there was such strong sentiment against the Congress party that even if Narendra Modi had contested the elections of a ticket of the Congress, he would have lost.

The Congress leader, however, had insisted that the outcome of the general elections may not take place again in the states like Maharashtra, where the assembly elections are due to take place by the end of the year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party had wont 282 seats from across Indian in the recently-concluded general elections, with the Congress had only managed to send 44 members of the party to the 16th Lok Sabha.

Nirupam had stated that these elections had been different, and that certain decisions that had been taken place during the 10 years of the UPA rule had stirred up a lot of anger among people. This had been coupled with the issues of price rise and corruption had been taken out of proportion by BJP.

He also said that this, however, was not a permanent trend, and expressed his opinion that he did not think the assembly election results would be similar to the general election results.
