Subramanium withdrew his candidature for appointment as SC judge following a negative report by CBI.

Former solicitor general Gopal Subramanium has withdrawn his candidature for appointment as a Supreme Court judge. The move came following a negative report concerning Subramanium by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

This comes after the government had put on hold the elevation of Subramanium as a judge of the Supreme Court on the basis of a CBI report that said he met the lawyer for 2G scam accused A Raja in his office while he was the solicitor general.

The Indian Express had reported that the new government had decided to turn down a collegium recommendation to elevate Subramanium to the apex court based on the CBI’s “negative report”, although the Intelligence Bureau had given a clearance to the previous government for his appointment to the Supreme Court.

When he was solicitor general, there was a controversy after it emerged that he had convened a joint meeting of the lawyer of former telecom minister A Raja, who is an accused in the 2G scam case, and CBI officers at his office to discuss strategy.

When the two CBI officers, who went for the meeting – a Special Director and a Deputy Inspector General – became aware of the presence of Raja’s lawyer in the office, they returned and complained to then CBI Director Ashwani Kumar. Subramanium’s name reportedly also figures in one of the conversations taped by the Income Tax Department involving controversial public relations executive Niira Radia.
