"Drivers try to speed past a traffic signal even if it turns amber or a few seconds are left for the green light, and this happens more often at night," said S P Singh, a traffic expert.
The traffic police said a smart signalling system is still at the planning stage. They added that since most accidents occur either late at night or early morning, civic agencies have been asked to install reflectors and signboards indicating the approach of a signal.
Requests have also been sent to trim the hedges on dividers that obstruct a driver's view of the vehicles ahead-which might have been the case for Tuesday's tragedy. Police said similar requests have been made from time to time.
They added that they would follow up on the installations of CCTV cameras on the 120 spots seeing fatal accidents, rash driving and speeding. "This project is a part of the ITMS system proposed a few years ago; we will be installing these cameras. Once cameras start working, we will begin the integration," said Anil Shukla, joint CP (traffic). He added that cops will be deployed till 1.30am instead of 12.30am in vulnerable areas.
Traffic cops have identified 10 vulnerable spots, none of which fall in the Lutyens' zone. "There are points in the Lutyens' zone which are prone to speeding but no specific crossing has been identified as accident-prone," said a senior cop. He added Munde's accident that the Aurbindo Chowk where the Tata Indica hit Munde's car was the first accident in three years. Around 80 challans were issued on Aurobindo Marg on Wednesday.
