Sikh leaders condemn violence - Times of India

NEW DELHI: The clash at the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar on the 30th anniversary of Operation Blue Star has been condemned by Sikh leaders across party lines in the capital.

Members of the SAD (Badal)-led Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (SGPC) in the city condemned the violence. "We too feel saddened by the memories of Operation Blue Star but condemn violence of any kind as a medium of expression of grief and anger over the 1984 incident. The stage of the Akal Takht cannot be used for political purposes," said president Manjeet Singh GK.

Supporting the SGPC in Amritsar, he said it did everything to maintain the decorum of the complex. "Only SGPC has the authority to allow some speeches and that too are purely religious," he added.

Shiromani Akali Dal (Delhi), which is aligned with Congress, condemned the attack but also blamed SGPC for the violence. "Things came to such a stage because of SGPC's failure to prevent and deal with the violence," said president Paramjeet Singh Sarna.
