New Delhi: Defending his party over criticisms on the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party National General Secretary Ram Gopal Yadav said that the situation in the state has improved. "UP government is handling the cases very seriously. It has ordered CBI inquiry into the Badaun rape case. Compared to other states, crime rate is less in UP," he said.
Yadav also held the media responsible for sensationalising the cases that have been reported in the state. "Media is responsible for sensationalising the cases. The coverage that the media gives and porn should be blamed for rising rapes in UP. Look at the kind of magazines which are published. Young people read these magazines and get affected," he said.
However, when asked if the SP government would apologise for the mishaps in the state, he blatantly refused saying that it was not the mistake of the CM or the state government and steps were being taken by the government to get hold of the culprits. "The SP government has fast-tracked investigation in the rape cases. There is no question of saying sorry. We are doing our duty," he clarified.
He also held the mindset of the people was responsible for the rape cases in the country. "Social disorders responsible for rapes, not the government. Mindset of the society is to be blamed for increasing rapes. The government is trying its best to punish the perpetrators," he added.
His comments come close to the incident of the gangrape and murder of two teenaged cousins in UP's Badaun district. The girls, reported missing by their families on May 27 night, were found hanging from a tree the next morning.
