UP: Girl found hanging from tree, police suspect honour killing - Hindustan Times

The body of a young girl was found hanging from a tree at a village in Moradabad district, Uttar Pradesh, on Thursday morning, rekindling fears of another Badaun-like incident in which two cousins were gang-raped and then hanged from a tree.

The fresh incident that took place at Rajeevpur Milak village in the Thakurdwara area sent shock waves across the state, which is reeling under a series of sex crimes.

There were reports that the girl's family had alleged rape. Police sent the body for post-mortem on Thursday. It is learnt the girl had been missing since Wednesday evening.

"We have sent the body for post-mortem and are waiting for the report to know the cause of the death," said Gulab Singh, deputy inspector general (DIG) of Moradabad range.

"A team of senior officials has visited the spot and the local police officials have been directed to investigate the case from every possible angle," he added.

Some passerby spotted the body of the teenager hanging from a tree and informed the villagers, who reported the matter to police.

"It could be a case of honour killing," said a police official on condition of anonymity.

The DIG, however, said that the girl's family had not mentioned anyone as a suspect in the case.

"Police have been collecting every possible information to crack the case soon," said the DIG.
