The senior Congress leaders made the statement after Ajai Maken, the General Secretary of AICC and chief of Media Department said that only few listed people were authorised to talk to media on behalf of the party.
"Only the spokespersons in the linked list are authorised to speak on behalf of the party", Ajai Maken said. He also released a list of 5 senior spokespersons and 13 spokesperson of party.
Congress Spokesperson and General Secretary Shakeel Ahmed said that Tewari and Alvi have not been gagged due to any internal party fued.
Ahmed said that there are 18 designated spokespersons in the party who are allowed to give the official line of the party. Certain remarks by Tewari and Alvi were not found in tandem with the party's official line.
Tewari and Alvi, however, appeared defiant saying they will not refrain from expressing their point of view.
Both leaders hit back at AICC's statement about spokesperson with Tewari remarking that he does not need any noun or adjective before his name when it comes to intervening in public discourse.
Alvi said that he has always defended the party as an ordinary worker and will continue to do so. He further added "I feel it is my responsibility as this is a very crucial time as the communal forces have not only taken over the country but are spreading communalism."
Tewari tweeted "I ceased to be national spokesperson of the INC in Oct 2012. When I intervene in the public discourse I do as an ordinary Cong worker who has served the party for 34 yrs. There are certain core convictions I believe in."
