NEW DELHI: Senior Congress leader Sheila Dikshit, who was also a three-time Chief Minister of Delhi, on Thursday brought in a new twist to the ongoing tussle for government formation in the national capital saying the BJP should be given a chance to rule the national capital region(NCR).
“I am glad that, for the people of Delhi, the elected government will be formed. If the BJP is claiming that they will be able to form a government, I think they should be given a trial and especially if the president of their party is saying so. I suppose he must be saying it with a sense of responsibility,” she said.
Dikshit, however, mentioned that the BJP’s real test would come on the floor of the House. “How they will manage that, right now the Lieutenant Governor has to be satisfied that they have a government,” she said.
Clearly taken aback by her U-turn, the Congress quickly distanced itself from the remarks.“It is surprising and shocking that Dikshit made such a statement. It must be her personal opinion. The Congress has a different stand and we all want an early election. We will not allow the BJP to form government,” Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee’s (DPCC) chief spokesperson, Mukesh Sharma said. Sharma, who was Dikshit’s Parliamentary secretary when she was Delhi Chief Minister, said he would issue a whip to party legislators in the event of a floor test being held in the state Assembly. However, a section of the Congress MLAs supported her.
