Sohrab case bail for ex-cop - Calcutta Telegraph

Mumbai, Sept. 11: Bombay High Court today granted former Gujarat IPS officer D.G. Vanzara bail in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which BJP president Amit Shah is a co-accused.

But Vanzara, in jail since 2007, will not be released as he is yet to get bail in two other cases. These are the alleged fake encounters of Ishrat Jahan and Tulsi Prajapati, a witness to the killings of Sohrabuddin and his wife Kausar Bi.

The cases of Sohrabuddin and Prajapati are being heard by a special CBI court in Mumbai after being transferred by the Supreme Court from Ahmedabad to ensure a fair trial.

Vanzara, who once headed Gujarat’s anti-terror squad, and two other IPS officers face charges of staging the encounter in which Sohrabuddin and his wife were killed in 2005. The police claimed Sohrabuddin was a gangster.

Prajapati was killed in 2006. Ishrat was gunned down with three others in 2004 by the police, who claimed they were plotting to kill then chief minister Narendra Modi. BJP chief Shah was state home minister when the encounters took place. He is out on bail.
