The appointment was made after a meeting between chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu and Sreedharan, the principal advisor to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). Sreedharan studied civil engineering at the Government engineering college in Kakinada.
Andhra Pradesh would implement two major metro projects in the first phase to be completed in three-and-half years. The two projects are the Visakhapatnam metro and VGTM (Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri) metro. The state government also proposed a metro rail project for Tirupati, which would be taken up only after the Vizag and VGTM projects take off. Naidu has now asked the DMRC principal advisor to prepare a feasibility report for all the rail-based mass rapid transit system.
According to the CMO, Sreedharan had assured Naidu that DMRC would support and assist the state government in every possible way for implementing the metro projects. Chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao, state government's advisor (communications) Parakala Prabhakar and other officials were present at the meeting.
