Guwahati, Sept. 14: A first-semester student was found dead behind his four-storey IIT Guwahati hostel this morning, police suggesting he had jumped off the roof last night.
A purported suicide note from Tushar Yadav, 19, to his parents was found under his mattress.
“The two-line note said ‘sorry’ to his parents, explaining he had been depressed the past two months,” an officer said. “But we can’t confirm it’s a suicide note until we receive the fingerprint report.”
It was in late July that the boy from Gurgaon in Haryana had joined the institute in Amingaon, about 20km from here, the authorities said. He went down with typhoid and returned home for a while, assistant registrar (public relations) Labanu Konwar said.
Tushar was a student of electronics and communication engineering. His father Narendra Singh Yadav, who has arrived here, refused to speak to reporters.
Six months ago, a second-semester MSc student from Bengal, Shoaib Ahmed, had hanged himself in his hostel room at the institute.
Institute director Gautam Biswas told The Telegraph the tech school had “an adequate number of counsellors for the students”. But he added that it wasn’t possible to check on the mental state of each of the institute’s 5,000-odd students unless they themselves approached the authorities.
“Tushar’s roommate saw him playing games on Saturday. But he didn’t join the roommate for dinner at a nearby dhaba saying he wasn’t feeling good,” Konwar said.
“The roommate didn’t find Tushar in his hostel room after returning at 10.15pm. Around 12.30am, he called Tushar on his mobile but received no answer.”
Canteen staff found the body around 7.45am, he said.
