Tamil Nadu might miss the Amma brand of development within the state, with the Bangalore court verdict throwing her out of power. Her Vision 2023 document had detailed plans of how to take the state right to the top, as far as industrial and social growth were concerned.
Jayalalithaas Amma brand of services were a big hit in the state.
She introduced the Amma canteen to sell food at cheap rates, Amma mineral water bottles for R10, Amma Pharmacy chain to sell medicines for weaker sections at affordable prices and Amma salt, besides introducing Amma cement at R190 per 50kg sacks. Jayalalithaa had also introduced the thali scheme that helped women of the weakest sections at the time of their marriage. A new insurance scheme also was designed for the people of Tamil Nadu.
The fiery AIADMK supremo and the iron lady of Tamil Nadu politics has been known for taking tough decisions on political and administrative fronts, drawing criticism from many.
She unseated her ministerial colleagues at regular short intervals and transferred bureaucrats at even greater frequency.
But on the other hand, she knew how to win the hearts of the masses and walked the extra mile to attract investments into the state.
The former Tollywood movie star had acted as the lead in over 140 films in various languages, including Tamil, Telugu and Kannada. Jayalalithaa was introduced to politics by MG Ramachandran, the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu. Soon after the death of MGR, Jayalalithaa proclaimed herself as his political heir.
She was born on February 24, 1948, at Melukote, in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district, Mysore state to Jayaram and Vedavalli in an Iyengar family.
