Amid supporters chanting slogans hailing him, Amit Shah's car rolled out of the VIP gate of Chennai Airport at 1.40pm. Union minister of state for shipping, road transport and highways, Pon Radhakrishnan, BJP national secretary H Raja, state unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan, senior leaders L Ganesan, former MP C P Radhakrishnan and other leaders welcomed the party chief. BJP allies, including PMK, DMDK were conspicuous by their absence.
The public meeting to be addressed by Shah, known for his organizing capabilities and strategies for elections, set off celebrations among cadres, who nursed dreams that the party would make big gains in 2016 assembly polls. "His presence is enough for us to register a massive victory. Our party is set to form a government in Tamil Nadu in 2016, and his visit is a prelude to that. Amit Shah is our lucky charm," said N Vinothkumar, a cadre from Nanganallur in Chennai, holding aloft the saffron flag near the airport. The supporters went ecstatic when the BJP leader stepped out of his car to greet them.
The party's recent victory in Haryana and Maharashtra has instilled confidence among cadres here. "Our Lotus is blooming," said E Manoharan, a functionary from Kancheepuram. Cadres did not seem perturbed over the absence of alliance partners, who joined hands with the BJP in the general elections in May last. The rainbow alliance of NDA managed to win Kanyakumari (BJP) and Dharmapuri (PMK) LS seats as the ruling AIADMK recorded a huge victory, winning 37 out 39 seats. "Amit shah will put an end to the corrupt rule of Dravidian parties," said T M R Sivakumar, a cadre from Pazhavanthangal.
After a brief stay in a private hotel in Guindy, Amit Shah left for Maraimalainagar, a suburb near Chennai, to address his first official rally here.
