Devendra Fadnavis.
The BJP and Shiv Sena alliance will not only confine to government but also extend to the local bodies elections for municipal corporations and zilla parishads ahead. Evoking the ideological base that held the saffron together in the past, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “The decision to come together was to respect the sentiments and mandate of the people of Maharashtra.”
The decision paves the way forward to a new poll partnership in the crucial civic body elections in Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections scheduled in 2017. And there are several other municipal corporation elections beginning from March 2015 across Maharashtra.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said, “The Shiv Sena has decided to join the BJP government in Maharashtra. Our alliance will go beyond the government and also work in local bodies elections.”
Fadnavis said, “The Shiv Sena will have 12 ministers in the government. It includes five cabinet rank and seven ministers of state.”
However, Friday swearing-in will have only ten Sena ministers along with BJP’s eight to ten ministers, he indicated.
According to Fadnavis, “The decision to coming together and govern in Maharashtra was to respect the people’s mandate in the October assembly elections.” In a candid admission he said, “There were some ups and downs that marred the Sena and BJP alliance of last 25 years. Ahead of the assembly elections we parted ways and decided to contest alone.”
Yet, it was clear that people of state have voted against the Congress and NCP.
Projecting a united face of saffron partnership Shiv Sena and BJP leaders shared a dais at the government guest house. The leader of the opposition in assembly, Eknath Shinde said, “The decision to join the government was to respect the people’s sentiments.”
On Friday, ten Shiv Sena ministers will take the oath of office at the function to be held at Vidhan Bhawan in Mumbai. The BJP is also likely to induct eight to ten ministers.
Fadnavis further said, “We have taken the decision to accommodate our smaller allies. But the final decision on whether they should be part of tomorrow’s cabinet expansion or next is still being worked out.” The BJP will offer atleast ministers of state rank to its alliance partners Republican Party of India, Rashtriya Samaj Party and Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana. However, whether they would be inducted tomorrow or in next cabinet expansion is still being discussed.
Fadnavis who took the charge as chief minister of state on October 31 is currently heading the ten council of ministers.
