The ongoing feud in the royal family of Amethi turned political on Sunday, with Anant Vikram Sinh — son of Congress Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Sinh — joining BJP at the party headquarters in Lucknow.
Anant — who joined BJP amid slogans of “Jai Sree Ram” and “Amethi chetra humara hai” — promised to build ground for BJP in the region. He said: “Maharaj (referring to his father Sanjay Sinh) is a senior leader, who is busy with national issues. I decided to join BJP for the development of my region Amethi. I am a small worker of BJP and would strengthen its base for development of my people.”
Soon after joining the party in the presence of BJP state president Laxmikant Bajpai, Anant demanded reinvestigation into the Syed Modi murder case. Syed Modi, the first husband of Ameeta Sinh (Anant’s stepmother and Sanjay Sinh’s second wife), was shot dead in broad daylight outside KD Singh Babu Stadium in Lucknow in 1988. He was a renowned badminton player.
“I demand that CBI should reinvestigate the case because both Modi’s as well as my family have suffered… they deserve to know the truth,” he said.
Anant, son of Sanjay Sinh’s and first wife Garima, had recently claimed their share in the Bhupati Bhawan Palace at Amethi’s Ramnagar after almost two decades. Sanjay had alleged that Anant is trespassing on his property. Anant and Garima currently stay at the palace along with Sanjay and Ameeta.
When asked in lighter vain which party flag will fly at the palace, Anant said: “Future victory and the people of Amethi will decide.”
He, however, refuted allegations that he has joined BJP to win the family battle or would campaign against Ameeta.
“I have joined BJP because I believe in Modiji’s vision and to bring development in Amethi. Neither do I have the stature to build pressure nor would I do it,” said Anant.
Asked about contesting the 2017 Assembly elections from Amethi, Anant said it was too early but if BJP and the people of Amethi wanted him to do so, he would.
However, when asked about contesting against Ameeta — his stepmother and former Congress MLA from the region — Anant said: “I have never considered Ameeta Modi as my mother and would never do so in the future. Thus, the fight in Amethi, if it happens, is going to be with an outsider and not any family member.”
State BJP president Laxmikant Bajpai said he hopes that Anant’s joining will contribute to the progress of the party in the upcoming Assembly elections. Speaking to The Indian Express, Bajpai said, “Both Sanjay Sinh and Ameeta Sinh have lost ground in Amethi. However, the people of Amethi continued…
