Less than 20 days after the crime, Delhi Police on Wednesday concluded their investigation against the driver of US-based taxi company Uber, and have accused the 32-year-old of kidnapping, raping and then criminally intimidating his victim.
In its 100-page charge sheet filed before metropolitan magistrate Ajay Kumar Malik, Delhi Police have said they will rely on the testimony of 44 witnesses willing to depose against the accused Shiv Kumar Yadav. The court has fixed January 2 for hearing the matter further. It also directed that Yadav remain in judicial custody till then.
He has been charged with rape, kidnapping, criminal intimidation and causing hurt. The maximum penalty provided by the Indian Penal Code for rape and kidnapping a woman is 10 years each.
During the hearing, cops said that forensic evidence, including the cab’s route map, prove that the ordeal took place during a two-and-a-half-hour period during which the 27-year-old victim was in the accused’s taxi.
Face covered by a muffler, Yadav was produced before the magistrate after expiry of his 13-day judicial custody. His wife was also present during the hearing.
Yadav, who was driving the cab, had allegedly raped the woman on the night of December 5 when the victim, who works for a finance company in Gurgaon, was headed back to her home in north Delhi's Inderlok.
He was arrested on December 7 from Mathura in a joint operation by the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Police and produced before the court on December 8.
