This is the first time that any party will form a government without any post-poll alliance. The BJP and its ally, Ajsu Party, won 37 and five seats, respectively, in the 81-member assembly.
A BJP-Ajsu Party delegation, led by BJP's state president Ravindra Rai and Ajsu party chief Sudesh Mahato, handed over the list of 42 MLAs to Governor Syed Ahmed and officially commuvar nicated Das's name as the leader of the BJP legislature party.
The delegation comprised BJP national general secretary and Union health minister J P Nadda, vice-president Vinay Saharasabuddhe, state in-charge Trivendra Singh Rawat, former chief minister Arjun Munda and MPs Ram Tahal Choudhary and Sunil Kumar Singh, besides newly elected MLAs from both parties. Earlier in the day, Das was elected leader of the BJP legislature party at a meeting of the newly elected MLAs on Friday. Nadda and Saharsabuddhe were observers at the BJP legislative party meeting.
Nadda announced the selection of the 59-year-old MLA as the leader of the BJP's legislature party. "Das has been unanimously elected the leader and is going to be the next chief minister," he said.
BJP said the names of cabinet ministers would be decided at a meeting to be held in Delhi on Saturday.
