Woman Feared Killed by Tiger in Belagavi Village - The New Indian Express

BELAGAVI : A 23-year-old pregnant woman is suspected to have been killed by a tiger at Mudagavi village in Khanapur taluk on Wednesday evening.

The woman has been identified as Anjana Appanna Hanbar of Mudagavi. Anjana was working in the field with her family members when the attack took place. She went to a nearby stream (about 200 metre away) to fetch water, but did not return.

Her family members went near the stream but could not find her. They, however, found blood all over the place and Anjana’s broken bangles. None of the family members heard her scream either.

According to the villagers, a man had seen a tiger a few days ago just about 2 km away from the spot where Anjana went missing. The villagers are searching for Anjana’s body.

Video Sparks Panic

Earlier, the circulation of a mobile video clip of a tiger hunting a dog, falsely described as that of the tiger recently sighted at Visvesvaraya Technological University, sent tremors through the city.

The rumour added to the tension of the authorities who have been attempting to capture the tiger. The ‘CCTV footage’ was circulated to hundreds of people through mobile phones.

The accompanying message stated that the clipping was recorded in the wee hours of Wednesday and thereby, the tiger was still on the VTU campus.

Deputy Conservator of Forests Madhav Ambady said this was the handiwork of some miscreants. He said that he too had received calls from officials, including Deputy Commissioner N Jayaram, enquiring about the footage. He said it was an old recording at an engineering college in Chikkamagaluru.
