Officials said the jawan, Devinder Singh, from Aligarh was killed as Pakistani troops fired on forward Indian posts and civilian areas in Samba and Kathua.
"There was peace along the border since Saturday night. But Pakistani Rangers again violated the ceasefire and fired heavily on Monday,'' said a source.
Over a dozen posts were targeted. Sources said the BSF troops retaliated with equal caliber weapons and added heavy exchange of fire was on intermittently till last reports came in.

Deputy Commissioner Shahid Iqbal Choudhary said heavy firing in Kathua sector forced evacuation of residents from forward areas.
"We have deployed over 20 buses to evacuate people from forward areas but it is difficult to carry on evacuation amid heavy firing."
