New Delhi: Congress leadership is learnt to be upset with former Union minister Kapil Sibal for appearing as a lawyer for the West Bengal government in the multi-crore Saradha scam case in the Supreme Court.
According to sources, the party leadership has asked Sibal to take note of the angry sentiments of party in West Bengal.
West Bengal government and ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) moved the Supreme Court on Monday seeking a court-monitored CBI probe into the Saradha scam, alleging that the agency was acting as an "instrument" of the Centre and targeting the TMC leaders. A bench, headed by Justice TS Thakur, said it would hear the separate pleas of the government and the TMC during the week, after Sibal alleged that the CBI was leaking crucial information to others even before they reached the state government.
Narendra Modi will never become PM: Kapil Sibal
But some Congress workers demonstrated in front of the WBPCC office here over Sibal representing the state in the Saradha case.
Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala, "As a lawyer, he is free to take any case but as a senior leader he should also keep in mind sentiments of the West Bengal Congress leaders."
The West Bengal Congress had on Monday taken exception to Sibal representing the Mamata Banerjee government in the Saradha scam case. "Sibal is a known face of the Congress and a former Union minister. He is representing the state government in the Saradha case in the Supreme Court. We feel bad," West Bengal Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had said.
Chowdhury, a former Union minister, said, "We can't dictate him, but we can only request him not to do it. He is more professional than politician. As long as I am the state Congress president, I can say that Sibal will not be invited to any programme of the party here," and added that he it has been communicated to the AICC leadership informally.
