FIR says poison ingested or injected into Sunanda - Times of India

NEW DELHI: The FIR in the Sunanda Pushkar murder case says that circumstantial evidence points to alprazolam poisoning. It also says that poison was ingested but it could have been injected too. It further mentions that injuries on the body were all sustained between 12 hours and four days before death.

The medical board has denied the possibility of alprazolam poisoning, but police have reasoned that it was mentioned as two empty alprax strips were found in the suite where Sunanda was found dead.

The FIR also records the entire sequence of events from the moment police were informed about the incident. It says that on January 17, 2014 at 9pm, then Sarojini Nagar SHO inspector Atul Sood had received a call from Abhinav Kumar, Shashi Tharoor's secretary, that Sunanda had "done something" in room number 345 of Hotel Leela Palace. Sood went to the spot along with his staff and found Sunanda dead in the bedroom.

Since Sunanda died within seven years of her marriage, Vasant Vihar SDM Alok Sharma was informed. He visited the spot and conducted inquest proceedings. "The SDM examined the witnesses and the relatives of the deceased and recorded their statements. Director CFSL, Lodhi Road, along with team also visited the scene of crime," the FIR reads.

The autopsy board, says the FIR, opined that Sunanda died due to poisoning. "The circumstantial evidences are suggestive of alprazolam poisoning. All the injuries mentioned are caused by blunt force, simple in nature, non-contributing to death and are produced in scuffle, except injury number 10 which is an injection mark. Injury number 12 is a bite mark," the FIR says.

The autopsy report was handed over to Sharma on January 20, and he sent his inquest report to Sood with these remarks, "In view of the examination of postmortem report where the cause of death is poisoning, you are directed to further investigate the matter thoroughly and take action as per law." Still, police didn't register an FIR.

On November 5, the autopsy board members along with a team of experts from CFSL visited the spot and collected samples. These were then sent to CFSL for chemical examination. The report was received on December 24 and forwarded to the autopsy board along with other "relevant treatment papers related to the deceased" on the same day.

The autopsy board next sent their report on December 29 in which they concluded that Sunanda was neither ill nor had any disease before her death; she was normal and healthy. The cause of death was identified as poisoning.

While signing off, the investigating officer wrote in the FIR this January 1 that poison was orally administered but didn't rule out the possibility of it being injected.

"In view of this latest report a case of murder is made out. Therefore, a case u/s 302 IPC be registered and the investigation be handed over to the undersigned," the FIR concludes.
