Since before he was chosen to be a navratna by prime minister Modi, Rambhadracharya has been a role model for lakhs of people living with disability. He initiated the Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University in 2001 and chose one of the remotest districts Chitrakoot for the purpose. "This will boost the morale of those working for the cause," said spokesperson Uma Shankar Pandey. He is also the mascot of Swachchh Bharat Mission.

A spiritual guru, Swami Satyamitrananda giri was born in Agra. He became a mascot of national integration when he founded the Bharatmata mandir in Hardwar. His social organisation provides free education and medical facilities to tribals in the hill state.

Born in Hardoi, Rajput is known for introducing reforms in school and teacher education systems as chief of NCERT. Though a professor of Physics, he is known for regulating the B Ed correspondence courses as the first chairman of national council of teachers' education. He has recently completed a project aimed at achieving religious amity through education and his edited book 'Education of Muslims in India'. "The appreciation is humbling," he told TOI.

This 27-year-old girl from Ambedkarnagar district is a true inspiration, who stood on an artificial leg and became the first Indian amputee to climb the Mount Everest in 2012. A national volleyball player, she lost her leg when miscreants threw her off a moving train in 2011. Her brother Rahul says the award acknowledges Arunima's inner strength who works as a head constable in Central Industrial Security Force and a motivator.

Noted litterateur Manu Sharma is also one of Modi's navratna for the swachchh bharat abhiyan. Recently, he gave up all his savings for the campaign. Happy over the recognition, he said, "I firmly believe hard work pays." He has immense faith in power of people and believes that people's trust fetched him this honour.

Bimla Poddar began philanthropic work in Varanasi for exploration and preservation of India's rich culture. Her vision led to inception Jnana-Pravaha, a Centre for Cultural Studies which is situated on western bank of Ganga. The organisation encourages practices of Indian traditions and houses a museum of artifacts from ancient India.
