The BJP is banking on the charisma of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to repeat its spectacular electoral performance in assembly elections across the country in Delhi. Modi will be the party’s star campaigner. He will address two to three rallies in the national capital. If needed, this number could be increased to seven – one rally each in all seven parliamentary constituencies.
BJP president Amit Shah, according to sources in the party, has taken full control of ‘Mission Delhi’ and has asked leaders to hit the ground and start an intensive campaign to ensure a thumping victory and maintain the winning spree. The “master strategist” is learnt to have asked the state leadership to focus on door-to-door and booth level campaigning.
“Our national president (Amit Shah) wants a micromanaged campaign and therefore, we have been asked to concentrate on door-to-door and booth level campaign. We have been asked to ensure that that not a single household remains untouched. We have to reach out to every single voter,” said a senior leader. He added “team of 150 members will monitor the party’s election management work at the booth level”.
Each leader of the 150-member team will be in charge of one polling station. Each of them will be assisted by 10 workers.
The leaders have been asked to identify booth level workers as well as candidates in each of the constituencies, the source said. The will be 11,763 polling booths in Delhi, said the Election Commission on Monday.
Union ministers such as Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitely, Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh, Dr Harshvardhan, Venkaiah Naidu and Smriti Irani will also campaign for the party. Three newly elected chief ministers of the saffron brigade - Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis, Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar and Jharkhand CM Raghuvar Das – have been asked to address public gatherings, they said.
Delhi BJP’s IT Cell comprising 100 people is set to launch an aggressive campaign on the social media. The party has decided to use all social networking sites to reach out to youth.
The party is also learnt to have distributed responsibilities to its different leaders. New Delhi MP Meenakshi Lekhi will see women and government employee issues, Union minister Piyush Goel has the responsibility of advertisements, Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Goel has made in charge of unauthorised colonies and slum clusters, Bhojpuri film star and northeast Delhi MP Manoj Tiwal will convince Purvanchal voters and Tughlakabad MLA Ramesh Bidhuri has been asked to reach out to rural voters.
“All BJP leaders and workers have been asked to go among the people of Delhi with the success story of the Modi government,” the source said.
Meanwhile, at the meeting of top party leaders from Delhi with Shah that continued till late in the night, the names of probable candidates were also discussed. “Name of candidates will be finalised at the Central Election Committee meeting which will be held within the next two to three days,” the source said. The filing of nominations starts on Wednesday.
Buoyed by the mood of workers following the party’s victory in the Delhi Cantonment Board elections on Monday, where the saffron party won five of the eight seats, it expressed confidence that its victory march would continue in the national capital and it would form the next government in Delhi which can move in tandem with the Centre to ensure all-round development.
In last Assembly polls in Delhi in 2013 December, BJP had bagged 31 seats in addition to one by its ally SAD, falling short of a simple majority in the 70-member House. AAP had won in 28 seats, followed by eight of Congress.
