NIA chief to review situation in carnage-hit dists - Times of India

Guwahati: Director-general of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), Sharad Kumar, reached Guwahati on Tuesday afternoon to assess the ground situation in Sonitpur, Kokrajhar and Chirang districts which saw large-scale violence against Adivasis by Bodo rebels in December, 2014.

The Union home ministry had ordered NIA to take over four cases from Assam Police.

Kumar met chief minister Tarun Gogoi and discussed the matter in the evening. "The investigation agency is going to probe the various angles of the cases—who orchestrated the violence and why Adivasis were targeted. We will even probe the possible involvement of politicians," NIA sources said.

Among the four cases NIA has been asked to investigate, two deal with Kokrajhar, one with Dhekiajuli and one with Biswanath Chariali.

Before visiting Gogoi, the NIA DG reviewed reports on the current status of the investigation and action taken with Assam Police chief Khagen Sarma and chief secretary Jitesh Khosla in Dispur. Earlier in the day, he met the investigating officers of NIA. "Kumar will visit the violence-hit areas of Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts on Wednesday in a chopper. He will leave Assam on Thursday," the sources added.

Already, a 12-member NIA team had reached the state a few days ago and had began investigating the four cases. The team had split into separate units to visit the violence-hit zones in both Kokrajhar and Sonitpur districts. "The NIA DG is expected to meet top Army officials in Tezpur," it added.
