'I never said farmers should not depend on either God or government, Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
Two days after Rahul Gandhi went tongue in cheek to “admire” Nitin Gadkari for his “honesty”, Gadkari said he had never said what Rahul credited him with. “I never said farmers should not depend on either God or government, Gadkari said, rising to make an explanation. “I want to make it clear that I never made such a statement.”
On Monday, Rahul had said members of some NGOs had informed him that Gadkari had told farmers that they should not depend on God and government. Rahul said he “admired” Gadkari as he was “honest” and spoke from his heart.
On Wednesday, Gadkari said he had made a speech in Maharashtra saying that farmers continued to suffer but they should not be frustrated. “They should depend not only on God or government but work to improve farm production by using new methods,” he quoted from his speech.
Rahul said he had been praising him. Gadkari responded that had he made such a statement, he would not have been afraid to accept it.
