Rupee opens higher at 60.36 per dollar

Mumbai: The Indian rupee on Wednesday opened higher against the dollar. The local currency opened at 60.36 per dollar against its Tuesday’s close of 60.43.


Asian currencies showed mixed trends, with the Japanese yen up 0.25%, Taiwan dollar up 0.04%, while the Malaysian ringgit was down 0.2% and the Thai baht weakened 0.17%.


Since the beginning of this year, the rupee has gained 2.44%, while foreign institutional investors have bought $5.08 billion from local equity markets.


The yield on India’s 10-year benchmark bond was trading at 8.831%, compared with its Tuesday’s close of 8.829%. Bond yields and prices move in opposite directions.


At 9.09am, the rupee was trading at 60.33 per dollar, up 0.15% from its previous close, while India’s equity benchmark Sensex index was trading at 22,522.09 points on BSE, up 0.25%.


The dollar index, which measures the US currency’s strength against major currencies, was trading at 79.8, down 0.01% from its previous close of 79.8.
