Breakthough

Belgium gets a corner kick but as we so often see, the delivery is poor. De Bruyne lofts it far over everyone and a promising situation for Belgium turns into an Argentine throw-in.
The Goal-Scorer

That early goal has lit a fire under the Belgians — they’re no France, these guys. It will be interesting to see how much pressure Belgium puts on Argentina. With the speed of Messi and Di MarÃa, Argentina is a bad team to offer opportunities on the break.
Kevin De Bruyne smacks a left-footer about 10 yards wide. They’ll be shooting early and often now.
Early Challenge

Well, that was early! A deflected cross bounces up nicely for Gonzalo HiguaÃn, who hits a low, dipping right-footed volley past a stricken Courtois in Belgium’s net. Absolutely ideal start for Argentina.
10': The Setting

Messi gets the ball, and something happens. He simply glides over grass; it’s not really running. He hits a nice pass forward to Ezequiel Lavezzi, but Lavezzi’s low cross is cleared by the defense.
2': They're Off!
Belgium kicks off in BrasÃlia! Possession for Belgium in the first couple of minutes, but no Clint Dempsey-esque first goal. But then, we didn’t expect that from the Belgians.
An Italian Ref
Many fans’ eyes will be on the referee today, Nicola Rizzoli of Italy, after Neymar’s injury yesterday in a rough and wild game between Brazil and Colombia. Will Lionel Messi be afforded more protection?
Ball Possession
What to Expect
Lionel Messi has lived up to his reputation at this World Cup, at times carrying Argentina despite triple and quadruple coverage. But winning it will require help from Ãngel di MarÃa, who scored the game-winner in the last round, as well as Gonzalo HiguaÃn and Ezequiel Lavezzi. Belgium has dispatched Algeria, Russia, South Korea, and the United States. With respect to those teams, its World Cup really begins here.
What’s at Stake
A semifinal against the winner of Netherlands-Costa Rica.
