Fresh Al-Shabaab raids near Kenya's coast kill 29 as foreign tourist shot dead - Telegraph.co.uk

The latest attacks hit the towns of Hindi, which is close to Mpeketoni, and Gamba, further south. In Gamba, bloodstains marked the entrance to the police station, where one officer was killed alongside at least 19 others. Nine died in Hindi.

"There was no police response, there is no security here any more. All Kenyans can do is watch as their brothers and sisters die."

Sheikh Abdiasis abu Musab, a spokesman for al-Shabaab's military operations, told Reuters in Mogadishu that the Somalia-based group was behind both attacks on Saturday night.

They had also said they carried out the June raids,

But Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya's president, dismissed al-Shabaab's claim last month and blamed local politicians, stoking an already fierce row with the opposition, which denied any role.

Saturday's raids will hammer an already beleaguered tourist industry and deepen public frustrations about poor security in Kenya a day before a big opposition rally is planned in Nairobi, the capital.

Underscoring concerns over security, a Russian tourist was shot dead in an apparent robbery at Fort Jesus in Mombasa, a 16th-century Portuguese military fort, which is a popular attraction in the port city.

Her bag containing money and her camera were stolen. There was no suggestion that the incident was connected to the terror strikes further north.

Britain warned against all but essential travel to Mombasa and some beaches to its north in May, citing fears over security and radical Islam.
