Wanchoo is learnt to have resigned hours after being questioned by CBI in connection with the AugustaWestland helicopter deal on Friday. CBI questioned Wanchoo at the governor's house in Goa following which an statement released by Wanchoo's office said he was questioned as a "witness".
Wanchoo is the fifth governor to have resigned after the new government came to power. Two others recently completed their tenure. All those who have resigned are bureaucrat-turned-governors which include M K Narayanan (West Bengal), Ashwini Kumar (Nagaland), B L Joshi (UP) and Shekhar Dutt (Chhattisgarh). H R Bhardwaj (Karnataka) and Devanand Konwar (Tripura) demitted office after completing their tenure.
Sources said the list of new governors prepared by the government is likely to feature former UP assembly speaker Keshri Nath Tripathi, Delhi BJP leader V K Malhotra, former Union ministers Ram Naik and O Rajagopal, former Lucknow MP Lalji Tandon and Balramdas Tandon. Former UP CM Kalyan Singh, whose name has been doing the rounds, is learnt to have said no to the offer of governorship.
"Decisions with regard to new governors have been taken and a formal announcement will be made soon," a senior government official said.
The government had nudged several governors to resign after it came to power but politician-turned-governors have dug in their heels. These include Kamla Beniwal (Gujarat), K Sankaranarayanan (Maharashtra), Sheila Dikshit (Kerala) and J B Patnaik (Assam). Sankarnarayanan and Dikshit are learnt to have asked the government to communicate through official channel for their resignation.
