Hyderabad: A day after the approval of Polavaram Bill in the Lok Sabha, newly-formed Telangana state in face shutdown on Saturday in protest against the passage of the bill that permits transfer of around 200 villages from the state to Andhra Pradesh.
The bandh call has been made by Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) and the Left parties which were against the approval of the bill.
Meanwhile, the Telangana government is planning to challenge the bill in the apex court.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao reportedly termed the move unconstitutional and said that experts are being consulted to plan the next move.
Terming the move as “unethical”, KCR further said that the step was a violation of Article 3 of the Constitution as Telangana's consent was not taken, as per news report.
The ruling party in Telangana argues that under article 3, the central government can't issue an ordinance altering the boundary of a state without taking its opinion.
The TRS has already sought intervention of President Pranab Mukherjee to stop merger of Telangana villages with Andhra.
The Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2014 facilitates the merger of 205 villages under Khammam district for the construction of Polavaram Irrigation Project.
These villages are likely to be submerged by Polavaram project being built across Godavari river in Andhra Pradesh. The central government’s move is to prevent any inter-state dispute.
