BJP at work on small cabinet, CM pick on Oct 27 - Economic Times

MUMBAI: The BJP started preparations to form the new government in Maharashtra and is now working on the formation of the cabinet and distribution of portfolios. The party has decided to initially swear-in a small cabinet early next week and expand the cabinet after proving the majority in the assembly.

The party called for its Maharashtra legislature meeting on October 27 to formally decide who will be the next CM and the date and timing of the swearing-in ceremony. After clear indications from the Shiv Sena they would be supporting the BJP without any conditions and would be participating in the government with the BJP, the central leadership of the party asked state leaders to give an assessment of who should be accommodated in the first list of cabinet ministers.

Senior state leader of BJP Vinod Tawde said, "We are now working on formation of the next government. How the cabinet would be formed is to be discussed on Saturday in consultations with the central leadership. We have not discussed any formula. Some of our allies are talking of 1995 formula or 2 to 1 formula. But no such conditions have been discussed. I can only confirm that preparations towards formation of the next government are on."

Though Devendra Fadnavis remains the frontrunner in the race for the CM's post, some of the other contenders continued to claim other options were still being considered by the central leadership of the BJP. Leaders indicated central leadership will decide the name only a day prior to the legislature meet. Some lobbying is still on between MLAs, who are backing different leaders.

"Over a hundred MLAs of the BJP think Nitin Gadkari should become as the chief minister and we have been in touch with the central leadership about this sentiment. They have not yet finalised any name. The final consultations on this will happen partly on Saturday and partly on Sunday We are trying to convince Nitin Gadkari he should come to Maharashtra. The central leadership is also in touch with some of the senior MLAs about this," BJP MLA & former state president Sudhir Mungantiwar told ET on Thursday, after certain media reports claimed Gadkari had withdrawn from the race.

The BJP would be swearing-in the CM at a public venue in south Mumbai on October 29 or 30. Before this, the party will approach the governor to stake claim as the largest single party in the house. Since it is now obvious that Shiv Sena will support the new government and participate in it, the BJP will not be depending on Sharad Pawar's NCP for outside support earlier offered.

The party proposed to its state leaders that only 20 to 24 ministers of the new government should be sworn-in initially and later, the cabinet will be expanded after proving majority in the state assembly. A brief session of the state assembly would be called in Mumbai to establish the government's majority. The first full session of this government will be held in Nagpur in December.
