Chautala surrenders, sent to Tihar

New Delhi, Oct 12 (IANS) Former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala surrendered to Tihar Jail authorities here on Saturday and was sent to Jail No. 2 after a medical check-up.

This follows the Delhi High Court's Friday directive to Chautala, also the Indian National Lok Dal chief, that he address no more political rallies in Haryana, which goes to polls on Oct 15, and surrender on Saturday.

Chautala was present in court after it Thursday sought his personal appearance as the Central Bureau of Investigation sought cancellation of his bail and bringing forward of his surrender date, earlier fixed for Oct 17.

"I am pained and disappointed with Chautala's act. Now that he is discharged from hospital, he should surrender," said Justice Siddharth Mridul on the conduct on Chautala, who was granted bail on medical grounds on May 21, 2013 and was getting extensions for the same reason, but has been actively holding rallies in Haryana.

Chautala has been out on bail after being sentenced on Jan 22, 2013 to 10 years in prison in the teachers' recruitment scam case. On Sep 26, the high court cancelled the interim bail granted to Chautala on medical ground and asked him to surrender on Oct 17.
