The ex-Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalitha, who was denied bail by the Karnataka High Court in the disproportionate assets case, moved to the Supreme Court with her bail application on Thursday.
The AIADMK chief had been sentenced to imprisonment for four years and a fine of 100 crore rupees has been slapped on her by a Special Court of Karnataka in the 18 year old case.
Jayalalitha has been in the Bangalore prison since her conviction on September 27 last month. It has been 12 days since the AIADMK leader has been behind bars and her bail plea was rejected by the High Court of Karnataka. She has appealed against this order to the Supreme Court. She had stressed on the court to hear her case urgently during the mentioning hour citing ill health reasons. She urged that she is suffering from many ailments and should be granted bail by the court.
Jayalalitha also pleaded to the court that she has not misused her powers as the Chief Minister to affect or mould the case in her favour. She also cited reasons such as being a woman of old age to be released on bail.
The veteran leader was refused bail by the Karnataka High Court on the 7th of October even when the special public prosecutor had not objected on granting of bail to her. She mentioned in her bail petition that the charge of acquiring massive disproportionate assets was false and the properties were acquired by legal means.
The Karnataka High Court Judge had said that there were no grounds to grant bail to Jayalalitha as she has violated human rights by her corrupt practices and brought economic loss to the country.
The High Court also denied bail to her aide Sasikala and her estranged foster son Sudhakaran. All these people are also sent to prison by the court in the assets case.
Since the verdict against the AIADMK chief has been pronounced, there have been massive protests in Tamil Nadu by Jayalalitha’s supporters.
