Ranchi, Oct. 6: Like in the case of most tainted politicians of Jharkhand, former agriculture minister Yogendra Sao’s cuffs have also led him straight to a cosy cottage at RIMS in Ranchi.
Congress MLA of Barkagaon, Hazaribagh, accused of running criminal gangs Jharkhand Tiger and Jharkhand Bachao Andolan, may have been in judicial custody since the CID (Jharkhand) and Delhi Police arrested him from Delhi on October 4.
But, instead of appearing before court today or tomorrow, which should have been done according to norms of his three-day transit remand issued by a Delhi court, the politician chose the well-worn route to state-run health hub RIMS.
Sao, flown into Ranchi from Delhi last evening, was sent to RIMS for a mandatory check-up.
But, last night, the 44-year-old former minister complained of multiple maladies. Right now, he is lodged in cottage No. 14 where senior RIMS doctor Umesh Prasad is monitoring his health.
“He (Sao) was taken to RIMS for medical check-up around 8.30pm yesterday. He was admitted here after he complained of unease. His medical examination has been done,” a senior RIMS doctor said.
Sao, who has criminal case (48/2014) lodged at Giddi thana, Hazaribagh, against him, was found sitting on a chair inside cottage No. 14. Clad in a white-and-green checked T-shirt and shorts, he appeared relaxed, his cottage guarded by some 11 police personnel from Ranchi and Hazaribagh led by assistant sub-inspector Ram Tapasya Singh.
Plainclothes CID sleuths led by CID inspector Anil Kumar Dwivedi camped on the hospital premises.
Asked by The Telegraph if he was indeed seriously ill, Sao nearly shouted. “Bahana nahin bimari hai. Dayen kaan me kafi dard hai, haal me iska operation karwaya tha. Ser mein bhi kafi dard hai. (I’m ill and it’s no excuse. My right ear hurts, it had been operated upon recently. My head also aches),” said the visibly irritated MLA.
Sao’s supporters lounging on RIMS corridors claimed their leader was not faking it.
“Two years ago, during an agitation then Hazaribagh SP Pankaj Kamboj had slapped Sao. It damaged his eardrum. Since then, he has been under treatment,” claimed a man who identified himself as Sanjay.
Sao’s ECG report last night appeared normal. Readings included pulse rate (90 per minute), blood pressure (130/84) and random sugar test (163). Cardiovascular and central nervous systems checks showed normal functioning and his chest was clear.
At 10.40am today, his blood pressure read 150/80. Nothing alarming, claimed doctors.
“He told us he has had diabetes for the past 12 years. We asked him to give us his past medical records. So far, we’ve done routine check-ups. More treatment can start once we observe previous reports and prescriptions,” Prasad said.
Doctors have prescribed Sao Anxit/Atarax (sedatives to treat anxiety) and Urezol (for urinary tract infection), among others.
CID (Jharkhand) has also informed Hazaribagh court that Sao might not be produced before court in the near future and his three-day transit remand looks likely to lapse. But, they are suspecting the former minister may have timed his illness to avoid jail.
“Before he (Sao) was produced before a local court in Delhi yesterday, he was medically tested by a team of doctors at Safdarjung Hospital. They found him medically, clinically and physically fit. Otherwise he wouldn’t have been allowed air travel. But, the moment he reaches Ranchi, diseases overpower him. The coincidence is hard to digest,” a senior CID officer said.
Wife threat
Nirmala Devi, Yogendra Sao’s wife, held a news meet in Ranchi today in which she said she would launch a fast-unto-death from October 13 outside the chief minister’s residence if Hazaribagh SP Manoj Kaushik was not removed from his post. Nirmala alleged Kaushik implicated her husband in a false case. She also alleged that the CID was investigating the case against her husband with a preconceived notion.
