Retrenchment in Bangalore centre is the biggest layoff at Yahoo since 2012, when it sacked 2,000 employees globally.
SummaryBangalore Centre is Yahoo's largest engineering centre in the world after Sunnyvale, California.
Yahoo Inc is learnt to be laying off about 400 workers at its Software Development Centre (SDC) in Bangalore. The Bangalore Centre is Yahoos largest engineering centre in the world after Sunnyvale, California and the retrenchment is the biggest layoff at the Internet major since 2012, when it sacked 2,000 employees globally.
Confirming that it is consolidating certain teams into fewer offices in Bangalore, Yahoo, however, refused to offer a comment on the number of workers it had sacked. We will neither confirm nor comment on the retrenchment, a company spokesperson told The Indian Express. Most of the engineers who are being asked to go are being offered five months of pay as severance and the layoffs will be effected in phases that would be completed by December, a company insider said.
Yahoos India operations have two broad units the SDC that operates as outsourcing wing for Yahoos global engineering needs, and Yahoo India, which handles editorial, sales, search and other support units.
As we ensure that Yahoo is on a path of sustainable growth, were looking at ways to achieve greater efficiency, collaboration and innovation across our business. To this effect, were making some changes to the way we operate in Bangalore, the company said in a statement, adding that it will continue to have a presence in India and Bangalore would remain an important office.
Wont comment, says Yahoo
