CJI calls for more compensation to farmers - Times of India

AHMEDABAD: As the Centre plans to make amendments in the Land Acquisition Bill, the Chief Justice of India Justice HL Dattu has cautioned the in power to make minimum use of agriculture land for the corporate sector and if at all the land was to be given to the farmers they should be given more compensation than the existing rate.

The Chief Justice was speaking on "Strengthening Climate Justice Initiatives: Livelihood Challenges at Local Level with a Focus on Farmers," at a conference organized in the city. The Chief Justice said that apart from discussing the impact of climatic change on agriculture and farmers, the party in power should discuss on how they can help the farmers. "In my opinion the agricultural land being acquired by the state governments for the purpose of handing over to corporate sector, if it could be minimized it could help the agricultural community to a large extent," he said.

He said that his statement was in the context that the land was the bread and butter for the agriculturists. He said, "When you take the land of the farmer, not only give him compensation but it should be more than the compensation he deserves."

He further said that as a Supreme Court judge when he was hearing such land compensation cases, he always asked the question to the advocate appearing for the states as to why they were fussy when it came to giving compensation to the farmers for whom the land was the sole means to earn his livelihood. Looking at state Minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasma he asked him to pass it on the at the centre that the farmers should be given good compensation.

The Chief Justice even said that the family of the farmer who committed suicide has to give bribe to the officer to get a ceritificate that the farmer has committed suicide.
