Hindus to lead Muharram processions in Delhi's Trilokpuri; Bawana simmers - Zee News

New Delhi: Days after communal tension gripped some parts of Delhi, heavy police force was on Tuesday deployed in Bawana area to ensure peace during Muharram processions.

Meanwhile, in another sensitive area in the national capital, Trilokpuri, more than 30 Hindu volunteers are ready to set an example of communal amity by leading the holy march observed by Muslims every year.

The Delhi Police have deputed extra force to avoid any fresh violence in the East Delhi area.

In Bawana, a 'Mahapanchayat', held on Sunday, had demanded changing of the route of Muharram procession in the Outer Delhi area, claiming that it would disrupt traffic and businesses.

An alternate route was chalked out with consent of both the communities following police intervention, and it will be curtailed to JJ cluster and not come toward the town and will also be observed in a "subdued" manner.

However, tension remained high after local leaders raised objections and provocative speeches and slogans were made at the gathering which was attended by hundreds of people.

Around 1,000 policemen have been deployed in the area and along the routes which will be closely monitored by senior police officials.

Commando teams have also been deployed and the Special Branch (Intelligence) is in touch with people of both the communities to avoid spreading of rumours.

In Trilokpuri, the Hindu volunteers will be divided among the five Muharram processions that will set out from different blocks of the East Delhi locality where a communal violence over Diwali celebrations on October 23 left 60 people, including policemen, injured.

Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Beniwal told a news agency on Monday: "Five Muharram processions may possibly set out from Block 27 and 37 of Trilokpuri around 2 pm tomorrow (Tuesday). All the processions will be led by the Hindu volunteers. The Hindu volunteers are also ready to manage 'Chhabi', a water stall."

He said: "The number of people participating in the processions is not clear. They may be between 400 and 1,000."

Talking about the issue, Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi said, "We are keeping a close eye on Bawana, Trilokpuri and other sensitive areas. We had information a month back regarding tension prevailing in the area (Bawana) and preventive steps were taken. We were in touch with the Peace Committee."

"I also appeal to the people to avoid spreading any rumours. If any one is found to be involved in such activities they will be dealt with strongly," he said.

He also said that Delhi Police have collected evidence of those spreading rumours through Whatsapp and social networking sites, and have warned that legal action would be taken against anti-social elements who get themselves involved in such activities.

Muslims observe Muharram to mourn the death of Imam Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad in the battle of Karbala.
