Medical student commits suicide in Raigarh medical college - Times of India

RAIPUR: A 19-year-old medical student of Raigarh Medical College allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in his hostel room on Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Nishant Upadhayay, who hailed from Varanasi. According to police officials, Nishant, a first year student had been staying in the hostel for the last one month. He had returned to the college on October 31 after Diwali break.


Preliminary investigations by the police have revealed that he did not attend his classes yesterday due to some health problems. Officials said the youth had locked himself up in his hostel room and did not venture out yesterday.


When his friends went to see him, they did not get any response from him despite repeatedly knocking on his door. The hostel management was informed about it and they in turn informed the police.


Nishant's body was found hanging on nylon rope from the ceiling fan in his room when the door broken open by the police. Officials said no suicide note was recovered from the spot.


Talking to TOI, SP, Raigarh, Rahul Bhagat said though it's a clear case of suicide, the parents of the deceased have alleged that the Nishant had taken the extreme step due to ragging. He said on the insistence of the parents, a second post mortem is being conducted to reassess the cause of death.


Bhagat said a case has been registered and investigations are underway.
