According to NIA, Kajal procured explosives from various chemical shops in Kolkata on the pretext of legitimate business and supplied it to bomb-makers such as Shakil Ghazi and Shobhan Mandal, who died while assembling an IED in Khagragarh, Burdwan on October 2. These bombs were then transported across the border by couriers such as Kausar.
A resident of Kazi Market, Kirnahar, Birbhum in West Bengal, Kajal had fled Kolkata after the Khagragarh blasts and visited Delhi on October 8. Kajal is suspected to have some sort of network in Delhi which NIA is investigating. It is also suspected that he procured explosive chemicals from at least two suppliers in Delhi who also have businesses in Kolkata.
After he got a hint that agencies had tracked him to Delhi, Kajal fled to Basti in UP where a state policeman, who was an acquaintance, provided him shelter. However, choosing not to stay anywhere for too long, he again fled to Birbhum from where he was arrested.
"We do not yet know if the policeman was aware of Kajal's credentials. We are still investigating the matter," said an NIA officer.
Soon after the blasts, NIA had raided his Kolkata house and recovered receipts and vouchers related to purchase of chemicals which were used in making the IEDs.
Kajal is said to be a close associate of module chief Sajid alias Sheikh Rehmatullah and Rezaul Sheikh who were running the Simulia and Lalgola madrasas. Like Sajid, Kajal too carried a reward of Rs10 lakh declared by NIA.
Meanwhile, investigations have revealed that the scores of bombs recovered and being manufactured at various places in Bengal were not just meant for Bangladesh. The operatives had also planned to set up terror modules in India to launch attacks within the country.
Sources said Sajid had told interrogators that JMB was trying to set up a terror network in West Bengal, particularly in the three districts of Murshidabad, Nadia and Malda, and in Assam through armed struggle besides having 'Shariat' rule in Bangladesh.
The banned group was ready to launch terror acts to achieve its goal, Sajid reportedly said. Investigators have also found videos of alleged atrocities on Muslims, suspected to be visuals of Gujarat and Assam riots, from a laptop that Sajid was using. These videos were used to indoctrinate youth for terror activities.
