In an exercise that could lead to another showdown of the Aam Aadmi Party government with the Delhi Police, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday wrote to Police Commissioner B.S. Bassi, seeking information about the transfer posting policy of the Delhi Police.
The letter contains a wish list of information including list of officers serving in their present posts despite having completed their tenures according to the policy, list of all SHOs and traffic inspectors in Delhi, including their dates of posting in present positions besides the status of police reforms as mandated by a Supreme Court judgement in 2006.
A statement from the CM office said the information has been sought in accordance with the notification issued by the President of India on 24.09.1998, which states that the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi has to exercise his powers with respect to police in consultation with the Chief Minister.
“Therefore, the Chief Minister is required to brief the L-G on such matters on a regular basis and the government requires this information for this purpose,” the statement said.
Assuring full co-operation on part of the State government to the police in its efforts to ensure safety and security to all citizens, particularly women, the State government has also advised the Police Commissioner to install “CCTV cameras in all police stations and Delhi government is ready to bear the cost”. The AAP government has underlined that CCTV cameras are required in police stations as the government regularly receives a large number of complaints about non-registration of FIRs by the police.
In his letter, the Chief Minister also requested the Delhi Police to provide a list of spots considered vulnerable for women so that CCTV cameras installation can be started there. “Delhi Police is also requested to send a list of dark spots, which could be potential places of crime against women, to ensure immediate illumination,” the statement said.
Seeking information about welfare steps being taken for police personnel, the State government has highlighted that the condition of police colonies requires immediate improvement as living conditions of police personnel are miserable.
