New Delhi: The government has evacuated 2,000 nationals from war-torn Yemen and evacuation from the port of Aden is over. Another 2,000 Indians are still stranded with sources saying that some may chose to stay back.
The government's efforts will focus on Sanaa where evacuations through the land and sea route will continue.
On Saturday, the Navy's guided-missile destroyer INS Mumbai evacuated 439 Indians from Aden. As part of this operation, called 'Operation Raahat', Indian authorities had hired small crafts to move 30-35 Indians at a time from the port to INS Mumbai. More than 1,500 Indians have been rescued so far.
MoS External Affairs VK Singh is in Yemen overseeing the evacuation operations on behalf of the Indian government.
One of the evacuees said, "Exit visas are not being given out. Many people are still stuck. Bombing are happening daily. Survival is tough."
In a rare case of India-Pakistan cooperation, the Pakistan navy has rescued 11 Indians among other nationals from Yemen. The Indian Navy also rescued three Pakistani nationals from the war-torn country.
Yemen has been witnessing fierce battle between Saudi-led coalition and Shiite rebels, who have battled their way into the heart of the country's main southern city Aden where fighting raged in the former stronghold of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi who has fled overseas.
Muthukumarasamy's son said, "The accused used to often call my father up. We will wait and watch how the CB-CID probe pans out. We are not under any kind of political pressure."
