Amid swirling concerns in the wake of his two-month-long absence, Rahul sought to deliver a resolute pledge of engagement, telling the massive gathering of farmers at Ramlila Maidan that he would fight BJP's land bill like he had fought land acquisitions in Bhatta Parsaul and Niyamgiri.
The two agitations spread over months had pitch-forked Rahul to the political centrestage. But his reluctant show after the party's defeat in the Lok Sabha polls raised apprehensions about his leadership.
Rahul, who was joined by Sonia in attacking the government, set the stage for the Parliament session resuming on Monday with the government ready to table the stalemated land acquisition law in Lok Sabha. The tone and tenor of their speeches suggested that the standoff with the government could escalate with Rahul at the forefront, as much to lead the party charge as to quell criticism about his lack of consistency.

Assuring farmers that he would stand by their side, Rahul warned them that they were running the risk of their land being snatched. "Modi took huge amounts of loan from industrialists for elections. How will he repay the debt? By giving them your land... Modi told industrialists how easily he snatched farmers' land in Gujarat and said if they made him the PM, he would do the same in the entire country," Rahul said.
Though the Gandhi scion's focus was on targeting the Modi regime, senior party managers were conscious of reminding him that there was no room for off-and-on politics.
