Murder convict stabbed 16 times in Tihar Jail, dies in hospital - Deccan Herald

New Delhi: April 10, 2015, DHNS:

A contest over supremacy at Tihar Jail led to the murder of a 29-year-old murder convict on Wednesday.

Six convicts from the opposition camp stabbed Ravinder at least 16 times, leading to his death during treatment at hospital.

The brutal attack unfolded in from of a warden of the jail number one.

The unarmed warden rushed out to call for help, but by the time support arrived, Ravinder had suffered serious injuries to his neck already.

Mukesh, the leader of the assailants, is serving sentence for three different cases, including a murder.

“Mukesh was at loggerheads with Ravinder over superiority,” a senior police officer told Deccan Herald.

The attack took place around 6.30 pm on Wednesday while warden Karamvir Kaushik was sitting outside one of the wards.

His attention was suddenly drawn by a group of convicts chasing one man.

As Kaushik rushed to see what was happening, the gang intercepted Ravinder in a narrow corridor near some toilets.

“They began thrashing Ravinder, but he managed to push them away and enter the gates of his block,” said Kaushik.

However, the assailants too managed to enter inside and finally, brought Ravinder down. One assailant sat on Ravinder’s hands while another sat on his feet in a bid to control him.

Kaushik said two men then began stabbing him with knives in the abdomen while Mukesh and another assailant began slitting his throat.

“On noticing the men armed with sharp objects, I rushed out screaming for help. A head warden and some other prisoners arrived on hearing my voice, but by then the attackers were leaving the spot,” said Kaushik.

They were allegedly heard saying Ravinder was punished for taking them on.

The injured man, meanwhile, tried to stand up with the help of the wall, but immediately collapsed.

The jail staff and other prisoners then overpowered the assailants and seized the weapons from them.

Ravinder was rushed to the prison dispensary from where he was sent to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital.

He died during treatment around midnight. Jail authorities said they would probe how the assailants managed to lay their hands on the “knife-kind of objects”.
