New Delhi: Election commissioner Nasim Zaidi is set to be the next chief election commissioner (CEC) of India on 19 April. He will succeed H.S. Brahma who retires a day earlier. President Pranab Mukherjee has cleared Zaidi’s appointment, said an Election Commission press release issued on Thursday.

Zaidi is a 1976 batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and belongs to the Uttar Pradesh cadre. Prior to this appointment, he has served a long tenure in the aviation ministry as the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

He will be the CEC till July 2017 and, in this period, he will oversee state elections in Bihar, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh, his home state.

Once Brahma demits office, Zaidi will be the only one in the three-member body as an election commissioner. After V.S. Sampath demitted office in January, Brahma was elevated as CEC. But the post which fell vacant after Brahma’s elevation has not been filled up so far.

A CEC, or an Election Commissioner, has a tenure of six years in office or 65 years of age, whichever is earlier.
