Faced with a volley of questions about Rahul's whereabouts and the date of his likely return, AICC spokesman RPN Singh said, "You are asking the same question daily... As already said he has gone for introspection on recent events with an aim to strengthen the organisation. Whenever we will get intimation, you will be informed."
At the same time, Congress MP Jairam Ramesh dismissed questions whether Sonia Gandhi's leadership of recent party protests meant Congress had given up on the young leader. "Everyone in the party including the vice-president are involved...," he said.
The queries came amid claims from within Congress that the Gandhi scion would return this week, a change from the assertions till now that "he would be back soon".
What appeared to stoke queries about Rahul is the editorial in Congress mouthpiece 'Sandesh' which asserted that Sonia would again lead the party's revival.
While the piece celebrated the 17th anniversary of Sonia's leadership of Congress and praised how she brought the party back to power in 2004, the reference was enough to trigger speculation in the wake of Rahul's sabbatical that has now touched 44 days.
Rahul went on 'leave' on the day the budget session started last month, stating that he wanted to introspect on the recent debacles faced by the party.
