New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday stayed criminal proceedings against Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in relation to a defamation complaint by Union minister Nitin Gadkari.
The court listed for 8 July a challenge by Kejriwal against the criminal offence of defamation under Section 499 and 500 of the Indian Penal Code 1860. This will come up with a similar plea by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Subramanian Swamy.
Gadkari had filed a criminal defamation complaint against Kejriwal for including his name in a list of allegedly “India’s most corrupt” politicians during the run-up to the 2014 general elections. Metropolitan magistrate Gomati Manocha had framed charges against Kejriwal in June last year.
