Maharashtra to play key role in AAP's expansion: Yogendra Yadav - Times of India

PUNE: Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yogendra Yadav said here on Saturday that a good performance in the general elections in Maharashtra and Haryana was important for the party to establish a political base in both states.

"Both states would be going for assembly polls later this year. Performance in general elections would play a key role in providing a breakthrough to the party ahead of the assembly polls," Yadav said, while addressing a news conference here on Saturday.

Yadav expressed confidence that his party would perform well in the general elections in Maharashtra and Haryana.

"So far, the party has received enthusiastic response from the common people in both the states. There is enthusiasm among people about the party's philosophy. This is a good indication for our party's further expansion," Yadav said.

Yadav backed the party's decision to announce candidates for about 400 seats despite lack of strong presence in many areas. "Though we are a small party at present, it was important for us to field as many candidates in the general elections as possible to establish our national presence. We are not here just to win seats. We are looking forward to bring a change in the existing political system. Our presence in maximum constituencies has helped the party to spread our message of change. Our decision to contest more seats will not backfire," Yadav said.

He rejected the presence of 'Modi wave' in the country, "A person who claims a wave in his favour is fighting the elections from two seats," Yadav said.

He further said that AAP's decision to resign from the Delhi government would not have any impact. The decision was as per the prevailing situation and initially people were not ready to accept it. People did not accept the way in which the party gave up the government, he said.

Yadav expressed a need to establish an effective system by the election commission to stop distribution of money ahead of the polls. He said his party would keep a vigil, but their effort would be too small considering the huge transactions that take place.
