Meet India's league of insensitive politicians - Times of India

Abu Azmi shoots himself in the foot yet again with a remark about women who have sex

Abu Azmi, a Samajwadi Party leader, has said that any woman who has sex out of wedlock — rape victims included — must be hanged. What's more, he added that girls these days complain if they are being touched, and even when they are not — and this, according to him, threatens a man's honour. When asked what the solution to rapes in India is, he told a scribe that any woman, whether she is married or single, "goes with" a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. And this is not the first time the SP leader has given such ingenious advice. Take a look at some of our leaders who have been there, done that.

Mulayam Singh Yadav Samajwadi Party Chief When: APRIL 2014 Note'worthy' quote: "Rape accused should not be hanged. Men make mistakes." Death sentence for rape is not fair. Boys make mistakes...

Asha Mirje NCP leader When: January 2014 Note'worthy' quote: "Girls should be very careful about what they wear and at what time they move out in the city. Their body language should not invite the attention of the potential rapists lurking around in the streets."

Mohan Bhagwat RSS Chief When: January 2013 Note'worthy' quote: "Such crimes (rapes) hardly take place in Bharat, but they frequently occur in India. You go to villages and forests of the country and there will be no such incidents of gangrape."

Babulal Gaur BJP leader When: January 2013 Note'worthy' quote: "Western culture is not good for India. Women in foreign countries wear jeans and T-shirts, dance with other men and even drink liquor, but that is their culture. It's good for them, but not for India, where only our traditions and culture are OK."

Mamta Sharma NCW chairperson When: July 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Women should be careful about the way they dress because such incidents are a result of blindly aping the West. This is eroding our culture and causing such crimes (rapes) to happen."

Rajpal Singh Saini Rajya Sabha MP When: October 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Don't give mobile phones to children, especially girls. If any of these kids have a mobile, take them away. What are they missing anyway? What are the girls missing without mobile phones?"

Abu Azmi Samajwadi Party When: April 2014 Note'worthy' quote: "Girls complain when someone touches them, and even when someone doesn't touch them. It becomes a problem then, and the man's honour is ruined in this. The solution (to rape) is this: any woman if, whether married or unmarried, goes along with a man, with or without her consent, should be hanged. Both should be hanged. It shouldn't be allowed even if a woman goes by consent." When: January 2013 Note'worthy' quote: "I support death penalty for the Delhi rapists, but there should also be a law that women should not wear less clothes and roam around with boys who are not their relatives. What is the need for roaming at night with men who are not relatives? This should be stopped."

Chiranjeet Chakraborty Trinamool Congress leader When: July 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "One of the reasons behind the increase in incidents of eve-teasing is short dresses and short skirts worn by women. This in turn instigates young men."

Om Prakash Chautala former Harayana chief minister When: October 2012

Note'worthy' quote: A Haryana khap panchayat wanted to lower the marriageable age for girls to prevent rape. Om Prakash Chautala said, "I'm with the khaps. This will protect women."

Jitender Chhatar Haryana Khap Panchayat leader When: October 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Consumption of fast food contributes to such incidents (rape). Chowmein leads to hormonal imbalance, which evokes an urge to indulge in such acts."

Mamata Banerjee West Bengal Chief Minister When: October 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Earlier, if men and women would hold hands, they would get caught by parents and reprimanded, but now everything is so open. It's like an open market with open options. Rapes happen because men and women interact freely."

Dharambir Goyat Congress leader When: October 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Ninety percent of rape cases are (a case of) consensual sex between the girl and boy... It's not the state government which is responsible for rapes. In fact in most of cases, it is consensual sex."

Botsa Satyanarayana Congress leader When: December 2012 Note'worthy' quote: "Just because India got freedom at midnight, is it necessary for women to move on the streets at midnight?"

Sheila Dikshit Former Delhi chief minister When: October 2008 Note'worthy' quote: "One should not be adventurous being a woman."
