After arriving at the airport, the Gujarat chief minister drove straight to Rajinikanth's residence where the meeting lasted briefly. The Gujarat chief minister also posted a picture of him with the actor on Twitter.
The nature of the discussion between the two was not known immediately. Modi was attired in a saffron shirt and dhoti and greeted Rajinikanth on the eve of the Tamil New Year.
The meeting assumes significance as Modi visited the actor in the run-up to the April 24 Lok Sabha polls, where the BJP is contesting in a six-party rainbow alliance.
Though Rajinikanth has not openly supported any party, the saffron party hopes the actor's fans would lean towards it and its allies, contesting all 39 seats in the state. Modi is lined up to address an election rally in Chennai.
