Sixth phase of LS polls underway - The Hindu


Polling for the sixth phase of the Lok Sabha election, in 117 constituencies in 11 States and one Union Territory, started on a brisk note on Thursday across India


Uttar Pradesh


Pplling began on Thursday morning for 12 Lok Sabha seats in the third phase of Lok Sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh to decide the political future of 188 candidates, including SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and Union Minister Salman Khurshid.


“The polling has started at 7 am and will continue till 6 pm. The polling has started on a peaceful note,” Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha said.


The 12 constituencies where polling is going on include: Hathras, Mathura, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Firozabad, Mainpuri, Etah, Hardoi, Farukhabad, Etawah, Kannauj and Akbarpur.


The electoral fortunes of 188 candidates, including 20 women contestants, will be decided by 2.03 crore electorate.


The EC has put up 21,990 polling centres and deployed 1.09 lakh employees for the voting exercise.


West Bengal


Polling began for six Lok Sabha seats in the second phase of the elections in West Bengal on Thursday.


Prominent among the 78 candidates whose electoral fortunes would be decided today are President Pranab Mukherjee’s son Abhijit and Mamata Banerjee’s bete noire, union minister Deepa Dasmunshi.


While five of the six seats — Raiganj, Maldaha Uttar, Maldaha Dakshin, Jangipur and Murshidabad — were bagged by the Congress in the 2009 general elections, which it fought in alliance with the TMC, the RSP had won the Balurghat seat.


A total of 83,06,756 voters, including 43,00,732 men and 94 in the other category are expected to vote.


Final phase in Maharashtra


In the third and final phase of the Lok Sabha elections in Maharashtra, 338 candidates are testing electoral waters in 19 Lok Sabha seats on Thursday.


Polling is being held in following 19 constituencies: Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Raver, Dindori, Nashik in North Maharashtra, Jalna, Aurangabad in Marathwada, Palghar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane in Thane district and Raigad, besides all the six constituencies of Mumbai North, Mumbai North Central, Mumbai South Central, Mumbai South, Mumbai North East and Mumbai North West.


Prominent candidates in the the poll arena include PWD Minister and NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal (Nashik), Union minister Milind Deora (Mumbai South) of Congress and Water Resources Minister and NCP leader Sunil Tatkare (Raigad).


BJP is contesting 11, Shiv Sena 8, Congress 10, NCP 8, MNS 7, CPI 2 and CPM 3 seats. BSP is contesting all the 19 seats.


The EC has put up 34,343 polling stations for the exercise.


In the three-phase elections in the state, ten seats in Vidarbha region went to polls on April 10, while voting for 19 seats in Marathwada and Western Maharashtra regions was held on April 17.


Polling in 7 LS seats in Bihar


Polling for the third phase of Lok Sabha election for seven Bihar constituencies located in Seemanchal area bordering Nepal and Bangladesh began this morning.


A total 108 candidates are in the fray in Supual, Araria, Kisanganj, Katihar, Purnia, Banka and Bhagalpur with the prominent among them being BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain, NCP General Secretary Tariq Anwar and RJD leader Mohammad Taslimuddin.


Over 1.04 crore voters will exercise their franchise in 9,840 polling stations spread across seven constituencies.
